The Russian Conquest of the Caucasus John Frederick Baddeley 9781143694400 Books

In Forsyth’s 900-page history of the Caucasus Baddeley is the only book he regularly cites for the Russian conquest. From what I can see from reading footnotes this is the only proper book-length study in any language. Everything else is documents, journal articles or popular history. As you would expect from the date, this book belongs to the age of high imperialism. Like the best imperialists, he has a great deal of respect for the natives without fully understanding them. He describes brutality and treachery on both sides without being surprised. The first part is about the annexation of Georgia and the various wars to consolidate this bridgehead south of the mountains. The second part covers the Imam Shamil war in the eastern Caucasus - Chechnya and Dagestan. The natural third part – the Circassian war in the western Caucasus – is missing. He says that this would be an anticlimax after Shamil and that the war was too complex for a proper narrative. He cannot resist a good story and has a bad habit of repeating official casualty reports without expressing proper skepticism. The maps are hopeless, at least on an old Kindle. You will need a good printed map or google earth.

Overall the printing of this book is adequate. My major complaint is that their maps were transferred without any care.
The only reason I managed to slog my way through half of this book was my keen interest in the subject matter. This was one of the most frustrating books I have ever tried to read. The narrative is continually interrupted in mid-sentence (or mid-word) by groupings of footnotes that relate to narrative that was read several pages beforehand. The narrative itself seemed awkwardly written, with convoluted run-on sentences and paragraphs, often requiring a re-read to fully comprehend. I was very disappointed in this book and it is doubtful I will ever attempt slogging through the second half of it. I will try other books on this subject.
